Working with dogs has really taught me the power of slowing down.
So many dogs are inadvertently kept in a heightened state because people think (and are often told) that dogs need to be kept busy all the time with enrichment, training, big back yards, endless access to toys and things to do.
This is especially so when it comes to working breeds, but the truth is, dogs also need to learn how to switch off and do nothing.
Dogs live in the moment and sometimes those moments need to be still.
Helping dogs learn how to just “be” has meant I have had to learn how to regulate my own emotions, stop looking ahead to the next thing that has to be done, enjoy the moment.
And to be honest it wasn’t easy for me. I had to learn it and so did my dogs.
One of the first things we introduce to our clients is specific decompression exercises to help settle both handler and dog. Practised regularly and consistently, it also helps the dog to associate the lead with being calm, something you need when you are out and about in high distraction environments.
This lovely photo came through from a dog Mum after we had a phone conversation about needing to slow everything down. It makes my heart happy to see this nervy and hyper vigilant little pocket rocket so relaxed.
